The Heart
The Heart (Card 24) is a Lenormand oracle card representing love, romance, and compassion. It signals deep affection, forgiveness, passionate connection, and the warmth that draws people together at their most generous.
Of all the questions people bring to a card reading, one appears more often than any other.
It is not about money, though money is important. It is not about career, though career shapes daily life. It is not about health, though health underlies everything. The question that fills more readings than all others combined is the oldest question in human experience: will I be loved?
Card twenty-four in the Lenormand deck holds the answer · or rather, it holds the space where the answer forms. The Heart is the card of love, romance, and the warmth that makes the distance between two people disappear. It is one of the most sought-after cards in any reading, and its appearance changes the emotional temperature of every card it touches. The Heart does not just represent love. In the economy of a Lenormand spread, it is love · the thing itself, showing up in miniature, asking to be read.

Origins and History

In Hechtel's Das Spiel der Hoffnung (The Game of Hope), the Heart occupied Square 24. The original tile depicted a heart · an image so universal in its associations that it needed no cultural interpretation. The heart as a symbol of love predates recorded history, appearing in art, poetry, and religious iconography across virtually every human civilisation.
The leaflet specifies the square precisely, and romantically. Whoever wins this Heart immediately offers it to the Youth at 28 or the Girl at 29: a woman landing on 24 moves up to 28, a man to 29. The rule is one of the very few in the game that depends on who is playing, and it makes the Heart a card that hands you straight to another person · love, passion, and emotional connection built into the mechanic rather than only into the picture.
The Heart is the one card where the surviving English renderings of the 1846 instruction sheet disagree, so no single wording can honestly be presented as what the sheet says. The public-domain text reproduced in 1903 reads the Heart as a sign of joy leading to union and bliss. A modern translation of the same sheet gives only luck and well-being, with no romance in it at all. Since no German original has been located, both readings stand unresolved. What can be said is that the entry is short but not the shortest on the sheet, since the Bouquet's is shorter, and that romantic love as the card's settled meaning is a later consensus rather than a documented starting point. Across traditions today the Heart is used as the primary love card; Brazilian readers in the Baralho Cigano tradition (where the card is O Coracao) expand it to include forgiveness, reconciliation, and the heart's capacity to heal what the mind cannot.
The Heart's connection to the Jack of Hearts adds a dimension of youthful, gallant romance. The Jack (or Knave) in playing card tradition is a young courtier · charming, somewhat impulsive, and motivated by feeling rather than calculation. This youthful energy infuses the Lenormand Heart with a freshness that distinguishes it from cards of more settled love.
The Blue Owl edition depicts a red heart surrounded by a floral border, set against the Jack of Hearts. The image is simple and unmistakable · perhaps the most instantly recognisable symbol in the entire deck. There is no ambiguity, no need for interpretation. The Heart is what it is, and it means exactly what you think it means.
What the Heart Means
The Heart is fundamentally a card of love and emotional warmth. When it appears, love is present in the situation · not as a vague sentiment but as an active force shaping outcomes. The Heart does not distinguish between the love that saves and the love that complicates. It simply confirms that the emotional dimension of the querent's question is real and significant.
This makes the Heart the anchor of every romantic reading and an important presence in any spread where emotions are at stake. The surrounding cards determine the nature, direction, and outcome of the love the Heart represents. The Heart near the Sun: love that radiates joy. The Heart near the Clouds: love that is confused or uncertain. The Heart near the Ring: love that is ready to commit. The card is generous in its meanings and endlessly responsive to its neighbours.
Positive Aspects
Fulfilment of romantic wishes. Forgiveness that heals old wounds. Reconciliation after separation. Unconditional love that accepts imperfection. The warmth of genuine human connection. Passion that enhances rather than consumes. Romance in its most generous form · love that gives without keeping score.
Negative and Shadow Aspects
Affairs and infidelity. Vulnerability to heartbreak. Emotional manipulation by those who exploit your openness. Codependency disguised as devotion. Loving too much, too soon, or in the wrong direction. The pain of a heart that will not close even when closing would protect it. Romance that clouds judgement and obscures truth.
How Surrounding Cards Shift the Meaning
The Heart infuses whatever card it touches with love, warmth, and emotional significance. The Heart + Ring is one of the deck's strongest indicators of engagement, marriage, or a deeply committed love. The Heart + Coffin suggests heartbreak, the end of a romance, or love that must be grieved. The Heart + Cross points to destined love that carries weight · a connection that is both blessing and burden.
The Heart's influence always asks: where is love in this situation? And is that love being honoured, tested, or transformed?
The Heart as a Person
The Heart represents a lover, romantic partner, or someone whose defining quality is warmth and compassion. This is the person whose presence makes the world feel gentler · the crush you cannot stop thinking about, the partner who knows your heart, the friend whose kindness never wavers. The Heart person leads with feeling. They do not calculate affection. They give it freely, sometimes to their own detriment.
Physically, the association is with someone attractive, warm, and emotionally expressive · a person whose face reveals everything they feel. The Jack of Hearts carries traditional associations with a young, charming suitor · someone who arrives in your life with romantic intent and genuine feeling. Occupational associations include counsellors, carers, nurses, matchmakers, and anyone whose work is driven by compassion and emotional intelligence.
Modern readers note that the Heart person is not always romantic. They can represent any relationship defined by genuine love · a parent's devotion, a friend's unconditional support, or the deep compassion of someone who truly wishes you well. The Heart's essence is not passion alone. It is the willingness to remain open when closing would be easier.

The Heart in Love, Work, and Health
Love and Relationships
In love readings, the Heart is the central card · the significator of romantic love itself. For those who are single, the Heart's appearance is one of the most welcome signs in the deck, indicating that love is present, approaching, or ready to be found. The surrounding cards reveal where, when, and through whom that love will arrive.
In established relationships, the Heart confirms the emotional core of the partnership · the genuine love that underlies whatever practical or logistical challenges the relationship faces. Combined with the Ring, the Heart signals engagement or a love that deepens into lasting commitment. Combined with the Bouquet, it suggests romance that is generous, beautiful, and celebratory.
The Heart near difficult cards does not cancel love · it contextualises it. The Heart + Mountain is love meeting obstacles. The Heart + Snake is love complicated by jealousy or deception. The Heart + Sun is love at its most radiant and fulfilling. The card always affirms that love is present. The question is what that love must navigate.
Career and Finances
In career readings, the Heart suggests work driven by passion rather than obligation · a career you love, a project that engages your emotional core, or a workplace characterised by warmth and genuine human connection. The card favours careers in healthcare, counselling, the arts, hospitality, and any field where compassion and emotional intelligence are professional assets.
Financially, the Heart connects love and money · purchases made from the heart, investments in things you care about, or financial decisions influenced by emotion rather than pure calculation. Combined with the Fish, it suggests financial abundance connected to work you love. Combined with the Fox, it warns against letting romantic feelings cloud professional judgement.

Health and Wellbeing
The Heart's health associations centre on the cardiovascular system · the physical heart, blood pressure, circulation, and conditions affecting the emotional and energetic heart. When the Heart appears in health readings, it often signals that emotional wellbeing is directly affecting physical health · that the body is responding to love, grief, loneliness, or the stress of unresolved emotional matters.
Connected to the Water element, the Heart links to the circulatory system, the blood, and conditions that respond to emotional healing as much as medical treatment. The card can indicate that love itself is medicine · that companionship, forgiveness, and emotional resolution are essential components of recovery. The Heart in health reminds us that the body and the emotions are not separate systems but a single ecology.

Note that card order matters in Lenormand. "Heart + Ring" carries a slightly different emphasis than "Ring + Heart." The first card acts as the noun, the second as the modifier. For a fuller treatment of any pair above, see our extended readings of Lenormand pairs.
In the Grand Tableau · House 24
In the Grand Tableau · Lenormand's signature spread using all 36 cards · each card occupies a numbered position called a "house." House 24 is the House of the Heart, and any card landing here takes on the quality of love, romance, passion, and emotional warmth.
If the Ring lands in House 24, commitment is infused with genuine love. If the Coffin lands here, an ending carries emotional weight · something loved is being lost. If the Key falls in the Heart's house, the solution to the querent's situation lies in following their heart or embracing love.
The House of the Heart answers the question: Where is love? Whatever card occupies this position reveals the area of life where romance, compassion, and emotional warmth are most present · or most needed.
