Sources & Tradition

The seven-chakra model presented here follows the classical tantric system codified in the Ṣaṭ-cakra-nirūpaṇa (1577), which describes six chakras with the thousand-petalled Sahasrara above them, and transmitted to the West by Arthur Avalon (Sir John Woodroffe) in The Serpent Power (1918). The now-standard Western framing developed in stages: C.W. Leadbeater systematised the seven centres for Western readers in The Chakras (1927); Christopher Hills mapped the rainbow colour spectrum onto them in Nuclear Evolution (1977); and the psychological correspondences were popularised by later writers including Caroline Myss (Anatomy of the Spirit, 1996). The seed (bīja) sounds are traditionally the mantras of the five elements, later assigned to the chakras. Correspondences to the Kabbalah Tree of Life follow the Western esoteric synthesis and are interpretive rather than indigenous to either tradition.
