Judgement

Judgement (XX) is the twenty-first card of the Major Arcana in Tarot, representing rebirth, calling, and honest self-evaluation. In a reading, it signals a moment of reckoning and renewal · a summons to rise into your fuller purpose.

Something is calling you.

Not from outside, necessarily. Not from a trumpet in the sky or a voice in the clouds, though the image uses that language. Something from within: a recognition that has been building through every card that came before. A knowledge that you have been avoiding. A version of yourself that has been waiting, buried, patient, for the moment you were ready to hear its name.

Judgement is that moment. The call. The response. The rising.

Visual Traditions: Three Decks

The Major Arcana's imagery varies significantly across the three major traditions. Understanding these differences deepens your reading of any deck.

Rider-Waite-Smith (1909) · The image shown above.

Tarot de Marseille (17th-18th century) · The Marseille Jugement shows a similar scene: an angel blowing a trumpet over figures rising from coffins. The imagery is more overtly Christian (Last Judgement) and less psychologically nuanced than the RWS version, but the essential message is the same: the call to rise.

Thoth Tarot (1943) · Crowley renamed this card 'The Aeon,' replacing the Christian Last Judgement imagery with the Thelemic concept of the New Aeon (the Age of Horus). The card features the sky goddess Nuit, the earth god Hadit, and the child Horus, representing evolutionary transformation rather than divine judgement. The mood is cosmic and forward-looking.

Key Imagery and Symbolism

An archangel (Gabriel, the angel of resurrection) blows a great trumpet from the clouds, bearing a banner with a red cross (the equal-armed cross: balance of opposites, the four elements united). Below, coffins float on a grey sea, and men, women, and children rise from them: naked, arms raised in wonder and supplication.

Mountains stand in the background. The figures represent the resurrection of the dead: psychologically, the resurrection of all parts of the self that were buried, denied, or forgotten. The trumpet's call cannot be ignored: it reaches into the grave and commands what was dead to live again.

What Judgement Means

Upright

Resurrection, rebirth, calling, awakening, reckoning, self-evaluation, absolution, transformation, answering a higher call. The trumpet sounds and you must answer. A moment of profound clarity about your life's purpose and direction.

Judgement upright appears at moments of profound reckoning: the point where you must assess everything you have done, acknowledge everything you have been, and answer the call to become who you truly are. This is not external judgement but internal awakening. The card says: rise. Everything has led to this.

Reversed

Self-doubt, refusal of the call, avoiding judgement, lack of self-awareness, delayed decision, fear of change, missing the wake-up call. Hearing the trumpet but refusing to rise.

Reversed, Judgement warns that you are ignoring a call, avoiding a reckoning, or refusing to rise to the occasion. Perhaps self-doubt is keeping you in the coffin. Perhaps fear of change is more powerful than the desire for growth. The reversed Judgement says: the trumpet is sounding. If you do not rise now, you may not get another chance.

How Position and Surrounding Cards Shift the Meaning

Next to the Sun, Judgement represents the awakening that follows illumination. Next to the World, the call has been answered and integration is complete. Next to Death, the resurrection follows the transformation: what died is reborn.

Judgement in a career spread often indicates a calling or vocation rather than just a job. In a love spread, it suggests a relationship that feels destined or karmically significant.

The Archetype: A Jungian Perspective

The call of the Self: the individuation demand to become whole. In Jungian terms, Judgement represents the moment when the Self (the totality of the psyche) issues a summons to the ego: 'Arise and become who you truly are.' This is the resurrection of all repressed, denied, and forgotten parts of the self: shadow elements, lost potentials, abandoned dreams, unlived aspects of personality.

The angel's trumpet is the voice of the Self breaking through the defences of the ego. The rising figures represent the integration of the total personality: nothing is left behind. This card corresponds to the late stage of individuation when all the scattered pieces come together.

The Fool's Journey: Judgement's Place in the Story

The Fool hears the call of the Self: the trumpet that demands awakening and integration. Judgement teaches: 'Everything you have experienced: every triumph, every loss, every shadow, every light: has led to this moment. Rise. Bring all of yourself together. Answer the call to become who you truly are.' This is the penultimate step: the integration before the final completion.

Judgement in Love, Work, and Health

Love and Relationships

Upright in love, Judgement signals a relationship that feels called or destined. It can indicate the renewal of a relationship after a period of separation, the recognition that a particular person is deeply significant to your soul's journey, or the moment when you and your partner choose to rise together into a deeper level of commitment.

Reversed in love, Judgement warns about refusing to face the truth about a relationship, avoiding the hard conversation, or ignoring the inner voice that is telling you something important about your romantic life.

Career and Finances

In career readings, Judgement points to vocation: not just a job but a calling. It suggests the moment when professional life aligns with deeper purpose. It can indicate a career change that feels spiritually motivated, or the recognition that your work is meant to serve something larger than personal ambition.

Reversed in career, Judgement warns about ignoring your calling, staying in a career that does not serve your growth, or the fear of the transformation that answering the call would require.

Health and Wellbeing

Judgement connects to regeneration, resurrection, and the body's remarkable capacity for renewal. Upright, it suggests recovery from a serious illness, the beginning of a radical health transformation, or the body's response to a wake-up call.

Reversed, it may indicate ignoring health warning signs, refusing to make necessary changes, or the denial of a condition that needs attention.

Esoteric Correspondences

Kabbalah

Judgement corresponds to Shin, the tooth/fire: the trident of fire, divine fire that consumes and purifies, the Holy Spirit. On the Tree of Life, Judgement walks Path 31, connecting Hod (Splendour/Intellect) to Malkuth (Kingdom/Physical Reality). This is the path of divine fire descending into the material world: spirit incarnating fully, the call to arise in the physical body.

Astrology

Fire (elemental): Shin is one of the three mother letters, corresponding to the element of Fire. Some modern astrologers assign Pluto: transformation, death/rebirth, the underworld, deep psychological change. Both associations capture Judgement's quality of absolute, fire-forged transformation.

Numerology

Twenty: 2+0=2, linking Judgement to the High Priestess. The hidden knowledge (High Priestess) is now fully revealed (Judgement). What was concealed behind the veil is resurrected and made conscious. The second iteration of the receptive principle: receiving the call of the Self.

Element

Fire: the fire of resurrection, the flame that consumes the old and ignites the new, spiritual fire, the phoenix. Judgement's fire is not destructive (like the Tower's) but regenerative: the fire that burns away what is dead and breathes life into what is ready to be born.

Card Pairings and Relationships

Every Major Arcana card takes on different dimensions depending on its neighbours. These pairings are not fixed rules but starting points for interpretation.

• Judgement + The World (awakening and completion): The call answered (Judgement) and the journey completed (World). Rising and dancing. Rebirth and wholeness.

• Judgement + Death (transformation complete): Death transforms (13); Judgement resurrects (20). The complete cycle of death and rebirth. What died is reborn, transformed.

• Judgement + The Fool (the spiral): Judgement calls; the Fool leaps again. The old journey ends and the new begins. The spiral of individuation continues upward.

• Judgement + The Sun (illumination and calling): Seeing clearly (Sun) and answering the call (Judgement). The penultimate sequence: vision followed by action.

• Judgement + The High Priestess (revealed and risen): Numerological twins (20: 2+0=2). The Priestess conceals; Judgement reveals. The hidden made manifest. The unconscious made conscious.

• Judgement + The Lovers (choice and calling): Column partners (6-13-20). The Lovers choose; Judgement calls. The human choice and the divine summons.

• Judgement + The Tower (destruction and resurrection): The Tower tears down; Judgement raises up. The ruins become the building materials for the new life.

• Judgement + The Hanged Man (sacrifice and rebirth): The ego surrendered (Hanged Man) is now raised transformed (Judgement). What was given up returns in a higher form.
