Death

Death (XIII) is the fourteenth card of the Major Arcana in Tarot, representing transformation, endings, and necessary release. In a reading, it signals a profound transition · the closing of one chapter so another can begin.

This is not the card you are afraid of.

Or rather: it is the card you are afraid of, but not for the reason you think. The Death card does not predict physical death. What it does is worse, and better. It says: something you are holding onto must end. Not because it was bad, necessarily. Not because you did something wrong. But because it has completed its cycle, and the only thing more painful than letting go is refusing to.

Visual Traditions: Three Decks

The Major Arcana's imagery varies significantly across the three major traditions. Understanding these differences deepens your reading of any deck.

Tarot de Marseille (17th-18th century) · The Marseille version is often unnamed (L'Arcane sans Nom), considered too powerful or unlucky to name. The image shows a skeleton wielding a scythe, mowing down heads, hands, and feet. The image is more graphic and less symbolic than the RWS version: this is Death as the great leveller, indiscriminate and unstoppable.

Thoth Tarot (1943) · Crowley's Death is a skeletal figure with a scythe, dancing amid fish, serpents, and scorpions. An eagle (Scorpio's higher form) rises above. The card emphasises the alchemical nigredo and the regenerative power hidden within destruction. The mood is transformative rather than morbid.

Key Imagery and Symbolism

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black flag with a white mystic rose (the five-petalled Tudor rose: beauty, purity, new life emerging from death). Before the rider, a king lies fallen (worldly power is no defence), a bishop prays (religious authority cannot prevent it), a maiden swoons, and a child offers flowers (innocence greets death without fear).

In the background, two towers frame a river and a setting (or rising) sun. A boat (Charon's ferry) is visible on the river. The white horse is purified instinct: the animal energy that carries transformation forward. The rose on the banner promises that something beautiful will emerge from what is ending.

What Death Means

Upright

Transformation, endings, transition, letting go, change, metamorphosis, the end of a chapter, release, rebirth. Something must end for something new to begin. Not physical death but psychological, situational, or relational death.

Death upright appears when a chapter is closing. A relationship, a job, a belief, a phase of life, an identity: something is ending, and the ending is necessary. The card says: do not cling. The old skin must be shed. The caterpillar must dissolve entirely before the butterfly can emerge.

Reversed

Resistance to change, fear of endings, stagnation, inability to move on, decay, the living death of refusing to let go. Clinging to what is already dead.

Reversed, Death warns that you are refusing a necessary ending. The relationship that ended months ago but you keep revisiting. The career you have outgrown but cannot release. The identity you have shed but keep trying to wear. The reversed Death card is not about avoiding death but about the suffering caused by refusing to let go of what is already gone.

How Position and Surrounding Cards Shift the Meaning

Next to the Hanged Man, Death follows naturally: surrender (12) leads to transformation (13). Next to Temperance, the ending is followed by careful integration: death followed by alchemy. Next to the Fool, an ending becomes a beginning: stepping off the edge of the old life into something entirely new.

Death in a love reading does not predict the death of a partner; it signals the end of a relationship pattern, a phase, or sometimes the relationship itself.

The Archetype: A Jungian Perspective

Nigredo: the alchemical blackening, the necessary death of the old attitude. In Jungian terms, Death represents the ego-death that is the prerequisite for genuine transformation. The old identity, the outgrown self-image, the exhausted way of being: all must die to make room for the new.

This is not the annihilation of the ego but its transformation. The skeleton is what remains when all flesh (persona, identification, attachment) has been stripped away: the essential structure. Death is also the great leveller (king and commoner both fall): the recognition that no ego-position is permanent. In individuation, Death is the crisis that makes growth possible.

The Fool's Journey: Death's Place in the Story

Having surrendered (Hanged Man), the Fool now experiences actual transformation: the death of the old self. Death teaches: 'You cannot carry the old into the new. Let it go completely. This is not destruction but metamorphosis: the caterpillar must dissolve entirely before the butterfly can emerge.' This is the central crisis of the entire journey.

Death in Love, Work, and Health

Love and Relationships

Upright in love, Death signals a profound transformation in your romantic life. This may be the end of a relationship, but more often it indicates the end of a relationship pattern: the death of codependency, jealousy, avoidance, or any dynamic that has run its course. Death in love clears the ground for something fundamentally new.

For those who are single, Death can indicate that you are releasing an old attachment (to an ex, to an idea of the perfect partner, to a fear of intimacy) that has been blocking new love.

Reversed in love, Death warns about clinging to a relationship that has already ended in all but name, or resisting the transformation your love life is trying to undergo.

Career and Finances

In career readings, Death signals a significant professional transformation: the end of a job, a career change, the closing of a business, or the death of an outdated professional identity. It can be frightening, but the card's deeper message is always regeneration: what ends makes space for what is coming.

Reversed in career, Death warns about professional stagnation, clinging to an obsolete role, or working in an environment that has lost its vitality.

Death connects to regeneration, the reproductive system (Scorpio), and the body's processes of breakdown and renewal. Upright, it suggests a significant health transition: recovery from a serious illness, the end of a treatment phase, or the body undergoing necessary detoxification.

Reversed, it may indicate resistance to a necessary health change, or the fear of a diagnosis that is preventing you from seeking treatment.

Kabbalah

Death corresponds to Nun, the fish: the life-principle that survives in the waters of the unconscious, the creature that lives in the element of transformation. On the Tree of Life, Death walks Path 24, connecting Tiferet (Beauty/Heart) to Netzach (Victory/Desire). This is the path of transformation from the heart-centre to the realm of desire: dying to old desires to be reborn with new ones.

Astrology

Scorpio: death, sex, regeneration, power, the underworld, transformation, intensity. Scorpio is fixed Water: the deep, still pool that conceals powerful currents beneath a calm surface. The eagle rising from the scorpion symbolises Scorpio's highest expression: transformation from the lowest to the highest through the courage to face what others fear.

Numerology

Thirteen: traditionally 'unlucky' (the number of the Death card reinforced this superstition), but actually the number of transformation and rebirth. 1+3=4, linking Death to the Emperor: the old structure that must be destroyed and rebuilt. In lunar calendars, there are 13 moons in a year: 13 is the number of the goddess and the cycle of death and rebirth.

Element

Water (via Scorpio): the depths, the underworld waters, dissolution, the emotional intensity of letting go. Death's water is not gentle or nurturing: it is the flood that strips away everything that is not essential, the undertow that pulls you down before the current carries you to a new shore.

Card Pairings and Relationships

Every Major Arcana card takes on different dimensions depending on its neighbours. These pairings are not fixed rules but starting points for interpretation.

• Death + The Hanged Man (surrender and transformation): Voluntary surrender (12) makes involuntary transformation (13) possible. The ego lets go; Death completes the release.

• Death + Temperance (death and integration): The old self dies (Death); the new self is carefully assembled (Temperance). Destruction followed by alchemy.

• Death + The Fool (ending as beginning): The most powerful renewal in the deck. The complete death of the old opens the door to an entirely new beginning.

• Death + The Tower (two destructions): Death is the slow, natural ending; the Tower is the sudden, violent one. Both are necessary; both are transformative.

• Death + The Empress (the cycle of nature): Growth and decay as nature's deepest rhythm. The Empress creates; Death composts. Together they are the complete cycle.

• Death + The Lovers (transformation through relationship): The Lovers choose; Death transforms. Love as an agent of fundamental change. The self that existed before the relationship dies.

• Death + The World (the complete cycle): Death and the World are the ending and the completion. Death strips away; the World integrates everything that remains.

• Death + The Sun (death and rebirth): The darkest transformation (Death) and the brightest emergence (Sun). The caterpillar and the butterfly.
