When people stop by my tarot reading tent at the local market they often ask whether I’m psychic, as though this is something only a select few can lay claim to. My response is simple – everyone is psychic, it’s just a matter of tuning into our intuition or that part of ourselves which ‘knows’ things.
Having a mentor to help you develop your psychic abilities can produce amazing results. Mary Phelan has distilled her research, study and years of experience into a fun, information-packed audio workshop with almost eight hours of instruction, exercises and information. Here Mary shares her thoughts on aspects of psychic development covered in the class.
LM: How do you define ‘psychic’ and do you believe that everyone is psychic?
MP: Being ‘psychic’ is about having the ability to perceive things that lie outside the sphere of physical science or knowledge. Essentially, we are all psychic and it is a natural part of being human. We come into this life with many extrasensory pathways of perception, that for most, are never developed. People we call ‘Psychics’ have opened up to these innate abilities either through development, or through a natural talent.
LM: Is there a connection between psychic abilities and intuition?
MP: The term, ‘psychic abilities’ is broad and encompasses many different facets of multidimensional perception. Intuition is one of these. It is just like our sensory knowing, in that we may hear something, see it, feel it and smell it and they all give us a part of the picture. Our extrasensory receptors are just like this, they give us information. And just like our sensory receptors, each person is unique in terms of which one or ones are dominant for them. For instance, clairvoyants are those whose predominant psychic sense is clear seeing. It is our job as the developing psychic to broaden our perspective and allow all the information to contribute to a bigger picture.
LM: What do you mean by ‘psychic protection’ and is it something everyone should be aware of?
MP: My Psychic Development course is designed to teach students how to build a strong foundation to their spiritual work. Part of this foundation is to learn techniques of ‘protection’, while at the same time, working to balance out fears and superstitions with knowing and truth. This then leads to a balanced way of being that ultimately does not require any protection.
LM: What are the main techniques you use for psychic protection?
MP: Psychic protection, at its most core level, involves changing the way you think and clearing old fears, superstitions and beliefs. Simply put, fear lowers your frequency and places you on the frequency of greater density where you may feel you require protection. Understanding and releasing your fears raises your vibration better, and more permanently, than anything else. Which elevates you to the frequency where protection is no longer necessary. But while you are working with this, there are many techniques that can be used to raise your vibration. Some of the methods outlined in the class combine energetic expansion with the understanding of your natural boundaries. We also use meditation, awareness of manipulation techniques used by others, sound, geometries and other things.
LM: In your course, you cover telepathic communication. What are the benefits of tapping into this and are there any downsides?
MP: We already have telepathic communication. As a matter of fact, our telepathic communication predates our verbal communication. Animals communicate quite effectively via body language, sounds and telepathy. As you develop your telepathic abilities, what you find is that all the information has been there all along, only you were accessing it unconsciously rather than consciously. As for downsides, in my view, there are none because we’re gaining knowledge and insight into how we communicate. Developing your telepathy is really about developing your awareness of what is already there and being perceived unconsciously.
LM: Do we all have Spirit Guides? How do we know when they are speaking to us?
MP: There have been many stories over the centuries about contact with Higher Conscious Beings. Whether we call them Spirit Guides, Angels, Totem Animals or Guardians, there have been countless reports throughout time that describe profound and miraculous interactions. I believe that everyone has Spirit Guides and that they are in contact with the masters and teachers all the time. Since each person is unique, the way their guides communicate with them is unique also. One of the things I emphasize in the Psychic Development series is to learn how to perceive this contact through your own personal language. It may not come to you in the form of direct communication, like talking or visions. It may come to you in the form of license plates, recurring numbers, in patterns or in songs on the radio.
LM: In summary, why do you believe people should develop their psychic abilities?
MP: Developing your psychic abilities is really about developing yourself and your spirituality. It’s not something you skim over just to impress your friends. It is a by-product of understanding how your body, mind and spirit work together to perceive and deliver information. It is about quieting the mind enough to hear what is ever present anyway, right there in the background.
Whether you are a healer, counselor, spiritual teacher or work with the public in some way, learning to develop your perceptions helps in many ways. It is about mastering yourself while helping others.
